GUIDE TO LARGE ROLL INSTALLATION

1. Equipment & Personnel

A group of three works well.  A fourth person can be valuable to answering home owner's or neighbors questions while the group is working.

Have a front end loader of your choice capable of lifting about 2,000 lbs. to unload the truck and place the rolls in position for installing.

This loader, if not too large to travel on the new yard, can be used with our install frame.  Typically, this would be a skid steer, small articulating loader, or a compact tractor of about 30 hp with a three point hitch.A sharp knife will be needed to cut the sod roll if it is too long for an area.

Remember, these rolls are heavy, just like a pallet of sod, so be careful.

2. How to Start

Look over the new yard to make long and efficient runs.  These runs should go across a slope if possible. Try to lay the new sod by staying off the neighbor's property if at all possible. They will appreciate it.

Have your loader operator position the rolls as they are unloaded from the truck, in areas where the installer can get at them easily, with minimum driving.

Try to make your first run long and in a straight line to the property.

3. OK, Lets Do It!

Ok, the sod rolls are on the ground, and the install frame is on the tractor or skid steer loader.

Put the shaft through the pipe inside the sold roll so the machine operator can pick it up with the install frame.  How the roll is picked up will determine the direction of travel when installing the sod rolls.

Move to your starting position and lower the roll close to the ground.  Unpin the end of the roll and lay the end on the ground.  Have your machine operator move to get the roll end at the starting point.  Now set the roll on the ground or close to the ground and start unrolling the sod, with a second person watching for wrinkles as you travel.  Continue to lower the sod roll as you travel.  Your speed will vary as you gain experience.

Your third or fourth persons on the crew will do the cutting and positioning of the sod, sliding it tightly against the last roll, landscaping or buildings.

Finally, these long sod rolls can be a lot easier to lay and you can get a better looking job completed faster, with less labor on the site.

The long sod rolls will greatly reduce the seams in your application, reducing the number of dry edges.  You will get a smoother lawn sooner.
